Challenges

The agricultural sector is one of the driving forces for the economic development of Bangladesh as well as it is the largest contributor for income generation activities for rural people. Agriculture is the one of the most ancient profession of the people of Bangladesh. Similarly, as it is an ancient profession still farmer’s follow the ancient cultivation process, as a result they do not get their desired production. To get necessary information and advice from Upazilla Agriculture Office, peasants have to visit almost 20 to 30 Kilometers. It is time and cost consuming. Sometimes visiting the long distance to go to the Upazilla Agriculture Office farmers cannot able to meet with Upazilla Agriculture Officer.

Towards a Solution

To reduce the hassles, increase agriculture production and to reach ICT facilities at the farmer’s doorsteps, a new mobile application that works both online and offline, and a website have been introduced in agricultural sector, both called "Krishoker Janala". Farmers are availed to get their necessary agriculture services and information using their Android mobile phone, laptop or PC. Now they no longer need to visit Upazilla agriculture office to identify a plant disease or to get agricultural advice because Krishoker Janala offers numerous pictures and videos of different plants diseases along with symptoms, prevention and treatment available in Krisoker Janala.

According to a research by a2i, the average time needed for acquiring agricultural services is thus reduced by up to 68% through this new resource. Similarly, average costs are reduced by up to 96%, when compared to the previous procedure. 66% of service recipients have been satisfied with the present procedure, and 30% have been very satisfied. The remaining 4% of respondents have been moderately satisfied.
