Description

About

Koidu is the capital and largest city of the diamond-rich Kono District in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone.  The city is located in the Interior Plateau, a large region of plateaus interspersed with high mountains, and has nine administrative sections with a population of 128,030.

Koidu is a major diamond and gold trading center in Sierra Leone. By virtue of it being a mining area, the city is one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse cities in Sierra Leone with inhabitants primarily engaged in trade (diamond, gold and cash crops) and alluvial mining of diamonds. However, the city is vulnerable to natural hazards, particularly flooding.
